Unbuilt design
This unbuilt home places a sunken octagonal conversation pit at the center of its shared living spaces. An intimate place to converse without a television, it arranges seating so everyone has a good view of one another. The Tracy House from Thunderbirds is a design inspiration, bringing a sense of architectural imagination to the idea of a home organized around gathering.
The design
Circulation passes around the sunken seating, allowing conversation to continue without a path cutting through it. The kitchen, dining area, morning room, and library offer different settings nearby, while a generous porch extends gathering outdoors. A ramp offers entry without steps, while the stepped approach uses at least three steps to make the change in level noticeable. Movable sofas allow furnishings to change. The lowered floor defines a cozy place for human interaction within the open living area.
